There is something so special about engagement sessions.

They’re relaxed, meaningful, and one of the first chances to slow down and truly celebrate this season of life before the wedding day arrives.

Recently, I had the opportunity to photograph my sister and her fiancé’s engagement session, and it was such a special experience to capture this moment for them.

Their session was filled with genuine connection, soft spring light, and the kind of quiet, in-between moments that make engagement sessions so meaningful.

What makes engagement session special

Engagement sessions are about more than just photos.

They give you time to:

  • Get comfortable in front of the camera
  • Connect naturally without the timeline pressure of a wedding day
  • Celebrate your relationship in a relaxed, meaningful way

It’s less about posing perfectly and more about capturing how you naturally interact together.

What to expect during your session

Most engagement sessions last about 60–90 minutes, giving us plenty of time to ease into the session and explore different spots.

During their session, we kept things relaxed and natural — focusing on movement, conversation, and letting moments unfold organically.

You can expect:

  • Gentle guidance and natural posing
  • Movement-based prompts (walking, laughing, interacting)
  • A relaxed, low-pressure environment

Nothing forced, nothing stiff — just a space to be yourselves.

what to wear

Outfits play a huge role in how your photos feel.

For this session, soft tones and light textures worked beautifully with the spring setting.

I always recommend:

  • Soft, neutral tones (creams, beiges, soft blues, muted earth tones)
  • Flowy dresses or textures that add movement
  • Coordinating rather than matching

The goal is to keep everything timeless, soft, and true to your style.

Making the most of your session

A few simple things can make a big difference:

  • Choose a location that feels meaningful or natural to you
  • Plan your session around golden hour for the best light
  • Focus on each other, not the camera

The best moments from this session came from simply letting them be themselves together.

Capturing this engagement session was incredibly special, and it’s a reminder of how meaningful this season of life truly is.

If you’re recently engaged or beginning to plan your wedding, an engagement session is the perfect way to celebrate this chapter and create something lasting before your big day.
