A Soft, Natural Style Guide for Anne Arundel & Calvert County Families
Outdoor family sessions in Southern Maryland are some of my absolute favorites. Between the open fields, waterfront views, and soft golden light throughout Anne Arundel and Calvert County, this area gives us the most beautiful natural backdrop.
One of the first questions I receive before a session is:
“What should we wear?”
If you’re planning outdoor family photos in Southern Maryland, here is my simple, stress-free guide to choosing outfits that feel cohesive, natural, and timeless.
Start with Soft, Earthy Neutrals
The landscapes throughout Anne Arundel and Calvert County are naturally calm and organic — which means soft neutrals photograph beautifully.
Think:
Cream
Beige
Warm tan
Soft brown
Muted sage
Dusty blue
Light gray
These tones complement waterfront sunsets and grassy fields without overpowering them. They also help ensure your images won’t feel trendy or dated years from now.
If you’d like to incorporate color, choose one soft accent and build around it.
Coordinate — Don’t Match
Instead of everyone wearing identical outfits, aim for coordination.
For example:
Mom in a flowing cream or soft floral dress
Dad in light denim or tan
Children in muted tones that blend the overall palette
Textures like linen, knit, cotton, and light layers add depth without distraction. They photograph beautifully in natural light — especially during golden hour sessions in Southern Maryland.
Matching outfits can sometimes feel stiff, and my goal is always to keep your session relaxed and authentic.
Dress for Movement & Comfort
Outdoor sessions often include walking through fields, sitting on blankets, or playing near the water.
Choose outfits that:
Allow movement
Feel comfortable
Don’t require constant adjusting
Flowy dresses and layered pieces photograph especially beautifully during Maryland’s golden hour. Light cardigans, textured sweaters, and soft layers add dimension and warmth.
When you feel comfortable, it shows in your photos.
Consider the Season & Coastal Light
Southern Maryland light has a warm, glowing quality — especially near the waterfront in both Anne Arundel and Calvert County.
Spring sessions pair beautifully with:
Soft pastels
Light neutrals
Airy fabrics
Fall sessions glow with:
Warm beige
Muted rust
Olive or sage
Try to avoid neon colors, bold logos, or heavy patterns that can pull attention away from connection and emotion.
Don’t Forget the Shoes
Shoes are often overlooked, but they can completely shift the feel of your session.
Neutral boots, simple sandals, or soft-toned flats work beautifully. Try to avoid bright athletic shoes unless they intentionally fit the overall aesthetic.
Small details make a big difference.
The Most Important Thing
While wardrobe plays a role, what truly matters in your Southern Maryland family photos is connection.
The way your child leans into you.
The laughter between siblings.
The quiet in-between moments.
That’s what I’m capturing.
The clothing simply supports the feeling.
